Final Fantasy XIV
« on: May 30, 2014, 04:08 PM »
Is anyone playing this or considering starting? Because I can tell you without a doubt that it is by far the most detailed and best thought out MMO that I've ever played. Combat is smooth, fluid and fast-paced. It's impossible for a player to rush in and steal treasure or quest objectives while the player who should, by all rights, get it is busy in combat. It's possible to sit in chairs (gasp!). Day/night cycles and weather systems. When it's raining, your character gets wet. Jiggle physics ( ::) ).

The only real downsides, in my opinion, are that character creation is a bit limited, especially compared to ESO, and it is, at times, extremely Japanese :P . And, of course, a subscription, but it's completely worth it :)

Over the past few weeks, I've been involved in building up the rp community on my server and it's getting quite sizeable now ;D

PC, PS3 and PS4 users all get access to the same servers and can play together, which is pretty cool, but, obviously, you need a keyboard for effective communication and, especially, rp, so PC is best (19.99GBP on Steam).

Wildstar is better :P I've never seen a rain in game yet, but apart from that it's all that you mentioned and more.

On a serious note, I really heard positive reviews about the game, like the class system. You can play any class with a same character, but you have to gear them up separately? And profession system is detailed. I would recommend it to anybody, alas I'm too away from FF universe and JRPGs to fully appreciate the game to try it myself.

Yes, you need separate gear sets for each class, but the inventory is huge, so storage really isn't a problem. It doesn't have anything to do with other FF games and it plays like a regular MMO rather than a JRPG and, of course, there are plenty of functions that I didn't mention, I just whipped out a quick list :P  Also, every patch they release (every 3 or 4 months) is almost equal to the Makeb 'expansion' for TOR (without needing another 2 months to fix 50 bugs that were introduced during the patch ;) ), so it's constantly expanding and they've announced that their first expansion is going to include as much new content as the original release :D

Wildstar looks too cartoony for my tastes: that's part of the reason I couldn't really get into WOW :(

You cannot really achieve 100% realistic look in MMOs, nor you shouldn't. I like the graphical style of WildStar, it's unique enough and appealing. Also, housing. And guild housing "on the road".

What I truly enjoy right now is path systems and world exploration. Yeah, I'm explorer as part of my path too :P I can spend a few hours simply exploring the map, jumping on extreme hights on the mushrooms and running like crazy through speed-points. Claiming new grounds, doing the most crazy things. For now at least, it's refreshing and fun :D

I don't want a completely realistic look, but I also don't want a completely cartoony look.

FF XIV has both personal and guild housing and, as your guild gains ranks, you can design your own guild emblem and attach it to your gear :D

You get gear emblem since level 1 of the guild in Wildstar. I bumped into the guild and then for some time wondered what are those "shields" that suddenly appeared around me:

Also WildStar has this thing about craziness. You gain a level? "F**k yeeeeah, way to go cupcake!" You have a series of kills? "Double kill!" "Triple kill!" "Uberkill!" "Superkill!" In that game, you are constantly reminded about your epicness. B)

In FF XIV the emblem is actually on your gear, not floating around you like some ghost.

And I know I'm epic, I don't need the game constantly shouting it at me :D

So I bit the bullet on a quiet day and got this and my god, I haven't even gotten through the tutorial yet. Far too dialogue heavy, ain't nobody got time for that. I haven't even fought anything yet!

The dialogue's awesome :P

And while it does take a few hours to get into the action, that's much better than the standard MMO system of random adventurer arrives in a new town and is instantly asked to kill 5 rats with no explanation. It makes much more sense that the adventurer would take time to learn about this strange new land, learn how everything works and then start killing :D
