Round of 16
« on: June 22, 2010, 09:13 AM »
Ok, so Uruguay wins Group A and Mexico finishes 2nd.

1st will play vs 2nd or Group B
and
1st from Group B plays vs 2nd Group A (Mexico)

Thus, chances are we will play vs Argentina to whom we lost last WC by a score of 2-1 after leading most of the game. They scored in the 87th minute to tie, and then in OT to win.

Javie Aguiree, Mexico's coach, said a few days ago he's not afraid of Argentina and if you want to win the WC, you have to beat the best.

Good luck to us!

Menelaos

The Brits and Yanks need a win today.

While the French being beat out of the WC in such a disgraceful manner, it would be far worse is the Brits don't make the next round.

Keep in mind, over their last 10 qualifying matches, they only lost 1. They were coming into this as one of the top 5-6 teams.

When the draw for the groups was made, the English press printed a headline "Easy" and had themselves winning all 3 games in the first round. Heads will roll in England if they don't make it.

Good games today!

Deutchland uber alles!!!

We're through, but really, it shouldn't have been this difficult.

To be perfectly honest, people are saying "Ohhhh, I hope we don't get Germany!" I do, I hope we get Germany, then Argentina, then Portugal and have to beat Brazil in the final.

It shouldn't be about beating teams like Algeria, it should be about beating the best in the world and showing them who's boss. What a way for England to win the cup by knocking out the world's elite.

Don't have much faith though, lol.

I wasn't watching the USA game, and have seen a shitty replay of the red card.. Why was Anther Yahia sent off exactly? From what I gathered, a stupid referee mistook him for another player who had waved their hand in his face.

England played superbly that game, our only downfall was the inability to seal each deal that was put on the table. Fabio obviously gave them a good talking to, and that change to full red (never lost a game in that kit, last used in 1970) must have given them a HUGE morale boost. And holy shit, DID ROONEY SMILE?!

I think we'll give Germany a good game, should it end up that way (it will). Pity about you yanks pushing us back into second place so we get to play against them.

Rink, did you see John Terry's headbuttdive? That's sheer determination right there.

Terry should really stop sleeping with the other players' wifes...not cool.

Germany will beat you Brits.

Don't cry for the US, they get the easy road vs Ghana and will then face Deutchland and their tourney will hopefully be over.

The Italians play today and my World Cup would be complete (already) if they got bunced out. However, they will most likely get in and then lose in the 16.

I missed the game, fell asleep a few minutes beforehand and by the time I woke up, it was over, was guttered I missed it. However, I did see John Terry's fish-like headsplash, it was a tasty treat indeed. The Germany thing, I pray it does not end up in penalities. I'm really looking forward to it, a lot of history between the two teams.

I got Group F in a sweep, Italy not delivering is bad news for my pocket.

Hope Spain get knocked out and I can't wait for Portugal vs. Brazil tomorrow.

I'm disappointed about what happened to France, but the US went ahead which is kind of exciting. Its cool actually being able to talk to normal Americans about soccer and have them actually care. I hope the USA does well because it would help publicize the sport in the USA and hopefully win more fans. Maybe they'll start an MLS team in Atlanta then!

Having said that, I'm backing Argentina to win because I want to see what Maradona does. He is sure to go absolutely crazy (he said he would run through downtown Buenos Ares naked if they won). Also, they have such an amazing attack and are playing good football. If their defense can hold up I think they can go all the way. They certainly have the attacking players for it.

I'm at a music conference thing in North Carolina in a tiny town called Montreat (its normal population is around 650, now there are probably 1200 people here during the conference) and there is a German family here on vacation randomly (normally everyone here is at the conference). I watched the Ghana game with them in our hotel lobby (its like an old school hotel with a huge lobby with a bunch of couches and chairs) which was fun. I'm supporting Germany more now after watching with them.

Darn right you are supporting the GERMANS!!!

Now, don't bug Fatchilles about the Italians being out of the tourney already, it would not be nice  ;)
