New PC
« on: March 08, 2007, 04:58 PM »
I'm planning on buying a new PC soon, but I don't quite understand the specs and such of them all, so I found one that interests me but it would be helpful if someone could tell me if it's any good or not here is some of the info for it..

Intel® Viiv™ Core™ 2 Duo E6300 Processor (1.86GHz, 1066MHz, 2MB)
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium - English
Dell™ 20" Black Wide Flat Panel (E207WFP) - UK/Irish
2048MB Dual Channel DDR2 667MHz [2x1024] Memory
500GB Serial ATA RAID 0 Stripe [2x250GB 7200rpm drives with DataBurst™ cache]
16X DVD+/-RW Drive
256MB ATI® Radeon® X1300 Pro PCI Express graphics card
Integrated Audio with Dolby Digital 7.1 capability
Dell™ A525 Speakers with Subwoofer
Dell™ Black Enhanced USB Multimedia Keyboard - UK/Ire (QWERTY)
Dell 2 Button USB Scroll Optical Mouse - Black
Internal 13-in-1 Media Card Reader

I'm not sure what all of this means, the price of it is £924.04 which in US money I guess is over 1000 dollars, any advice and such would be great thanks..

Its a good computer. I would get a better video card though. That ones perfectly fine, but a higher level one would be good if you play games like BF2142.

Apparantly Windows Vista is Terrible.

Also double check if that Duo Core Processor is good, if you're after gaming a single Intel Pentium 4 processer  with great stats is better than a Duo Core Processor with mediocre stats.

Id agree with alpha you probably should get a higher end P4 and it seems you are skimping out in the video card category. Yes an x1300 is fine but it only has 4 pixel pipe lines and you could get an x800 or a x1600 for not much more that have 12 so everything will look much better and they are way better cards. Skip the core duo get the better video card in my opinion. oh and get XP if you want to make sure everything actually will work especially if you have older games/programs.

Dual core is better than a single core. That is what I have and it is really good. I can play BF2142 with max video with no lag on titan maps (I have the x1950pro video card which helps a ton though). If you got a better video card then it would be much better.

Vista isn't bad for web browsing and word processing, but I have no idea about how it would be for games.

A P4 will not do better than a C2D for games.

Thanks for all the input, I'll take all of it into consideration before I part with my money. I went into a PC shop today, and the man in there said it might be worth just upgrading my current PC, so I might consider that too.

It's a Dell Dimension 4600 Windows XP, I don't really know too much else about it really. Other than it's got like 256MB?, I'd upgrade it too 1gig, and most likely upgrade a few other things as well.

The only way to know if you should upgrade is to have the actual specs. Go to Start->Run->'DxDiag'. That will tell you most of your specs. Dells are not great for upgrading so a new computer would probably be better.

Also, you probably want more than 1GB RAM. If you plan on upgrading to vista you definitely want 2 gigs.
