I need a new computer..
« on: September 27, 2007, 10:24 AM »
This is to the brits I suppose, because that's where I live and that's where I'm going to buy a computer.

I have asked loads people how I should buy a computer, some say buy from dell, others say make it yourself.

Truth is, I can't make a computer, and I hear Dell or any other premade computers are rip off.

Is there a type of store that you can call where they order the pieces and make the computer for you? Of course, you pay them for it.  I think I heard of one ages ago but I lost the number. www.yell.com is useless too  ;)

If you live near a Fry's their prices are the best.. Also, NEWEGG.com has great deals if you are interested in building.

I suggest getting a HP, its what I have and its perfect.

I have upgraded it though, so it keeps up with the games being released. You can buy brand new HP computers though for a very decent price and good specs.

Dont go near dell.

Well lets put it this way. Dell do mass production computers, that means that the propability of it being junk is 50% depending on the factory quality and the batch they came out of. But it allso means that it can be good 50%. That's why they make them in mass production and the ensuranse if for the entire set. That means that if it breaks up the likelines of it being fix faster is higher. And because ofthat sort of problems Dell sell on low prize. Now the custom made are better on the part that each part has it's own ensurance/guarantie/ and that you have a wide range to chose from and complect your PC the way you want, because with the factory ones you get a set things that you might never need. But the trick is to watch out what you buy , because some parts are uncompatable with others unlike with the Factory ones. In custom you can get better performance on some parts by enchansing them. The other esue with custom is that each part is different and if one is broken the time for it to be replaced would be longer since it's a sngular shipment. The other thing is that from a batch of for example vid cards only one or a few might be deffective, unlike the factory ones where max one can be deffective because of an error. Another thing is that custom parts sometimes are the prize of a brand new computer. But that's because they have high values of performance and endurance, since most get to be tested one by one.
Total:
Mass production like Dell  = low prise , faster repair rate , lower endurance on each part, good if you are low on money and plan to get a better comp later. since the ensurance on the whole thing is shorter. You don't have to make anything yourself.
Custommade = high prise, lower repair rate , higherendurance on each part, good if you plan to spen a lot of money in a short time so that you won't have to invest more money later to upgrade. Every part has a way longer ensurance than a whole set. You have to make it yourself and the probability to mix it up is higher , unles you have a friend that's had a lot of experience  or call someone you have to pay to and thus spend more money.

Uhhh sorry. But I tried to be helpfull >> and I probably just danced on the grave of English gramer ,but  who cares. If anything .... ask me  if you understand what I said.  <<

Future? Yeh..right. I went to an apple store just the other day. This dude were talking about how Windows was a trojan and that the moment your pc is hooked to the internet, you get all the viruses you can get. With a Mac, that doesn't happen! You know why? Because once you try to open internet, the bloody thing crashes.

Of course, all the company's who use a normal PC, are stupid, because all their data is being compromised. Give me a break. If mac is so great, why isn't it used more than PC's?

Future? Try running a DirectX 10 game on a mac, the thing would die.

LMAO !!! nice, well i guess you must not live in the US, because there are over 6 stores here localy now that are only MAC stores and they are always packed tighter than any nightclub you can imagine. And also look into any company that deals with.

Media
Art
Design
Illustration
Web
Flash/director/final cut pro/photoshop

that specializes and lives for advertizment such as donner / campbell ewal / etc... etc...

They all use Macs.   My entire department in college,. Media and Communication Arts with specialties in Illustation, Digital design and layout, Web, photography, 3d animations has over 20 classrooms with over 30 stations each and all updated newest software including the entire design, adobe suit, macromedia, maya programs which i run at the same time and have never had a problem. Also i have one at home and have always had pc's before and it runs 50 times better, has yet to freeze, give me an error, slow down...

Dude if your going to be crunching numbers or working on calcs. thats fine, in a library filing and typing letters, PC is great, but if your going to be doing anything visual/sound ill see you cross soon.  You worry about games and thats great, yea they werent ment for games, they are made for Advertizing Arts, Movies, and Sound.

why dont you tell us how awesome Vista is, if thats the future. people are actually having to pay extra to NOT get vista.

Vista now sucks. I am not going to deny that. But your precious apple just doesn't work. No wonder you Americans use it. It's your brand. But the rest of the world doesn't use it. Nothing works on it. All the better programs are for windows, not mac. The only thing good about apple is the ipod. I got an ipod, and that thing even crashes sometimes!

If you want fancy looking things? Yes, get a mac. If you want power and efficiency, use a pc.

You talk about flash illustrators etc. But why aren't there any add ons for a mac? With a pc you can get drawing tables, sheets to draw on and it transfers it to photoshop. I got one, and works like a charm. The moment you hook it up to a mac, you get ERROR. Does the thing even have a USB port? lol.

The market is controlled by windows now because it is simply better. It delivers better quality in programs and power. That is why all the better programs come out for a PC, and not for a mac.

Mac is a pc for people who don't know how to use a pc. It's like buying a children's laptop at Toys 'R Us.

roflmao !!!  Dude wacom tablets, is what you mean by drawing tables... THE YES... infact every station at school has one. So you need to look into things first. Now i can tell that youve never been anywhere neer a mac because each one comes with more usb ports than any pc. Addons arent necessary because the software is self updated and always full version. and there is nothing that you can run on a pc that a mac cant run. Anyfile type, is readable and you dont need to be buying special programs for them such as psd's or ai's which a pc will die before reading unless you have the correct program. the reason your ipod keeps having errors might be because your PC cant handle it.

Fact: You can run most anything on Macs, no matter what the platform.
Boot Camp from Apple, you can dual-boot your system into either Mac OS X or Windows XP. Alternatively, using virtualization software such as Parallels Desktop for Mac or VMWare, you can run Windows XP, Linux, or any other operating system simultaneously with Mac OS X.
Fact: Macs can run Microsoft Office, and the files you create on Mac are fully compatible with Windows.
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac OS X gives you full-featured Word, Powerpoint, and Excel with the same familiar interfaces. And for any Microsoft application that’s not yet available for Mac — like Microsoft Access or Project — you can run them on Intel-based Macs using Boot Camp or virtualization software like Parallels or VMWare

Fact: Mac OS X can talk to every major file server protocol on every major server platform on the market today.
Mac OS X includes the major networking protocols for accessing every major server platform, including Windows, Linux, and UNIX. Mac OS X is the most compatible operating system available today.

Fact: Apple hardware and software offer tremendous value.
Owning a Mac offers the scientist a cost-effective solution and great return on investment. The Mac is designed for optimal productivity with exceptional price/performance and minimal investment for the most innovative computing features offered on any platform

Fact: Mac OS X is an open architecture, based on industry standards.
It’s based on an open source variant of FreeBSD UNIX and developed entirely with openness and interoperability in mind. Mac OS X incorporates the major open standards for directory services, programming and scripting languages, interprocess communications and arithmetic libraries

Fact: The Mac — it just works.
Mac users are up and running quickly thanks to the well-designed, intuitive user interface of Mac OS X. On the IT side, the Mac makes system administration so easy you can expand your existing compute infrastructure without increasing your IT staff.

Fact: Mac OS X is based on UNIX, a platform renowned for its stability.
Beneath the surface of Mac OS X lies an industrial-strength UNIX foundation integrating a Mach 3.0 microkernel and state-of-the-art FreeBSD 5 variant

Fact: Cross-platform development is one of the many strengths of Mac OS X.
Mac OS X is a superior development platform that includes a robust set of developer tools allowing you to develop and test cross-platform applications

Fact: Apple makes serious computers for serious science.
In addition to making iPods, Apple develops the technology to tackle the most demanding computational and visualization problems facing scientists today. In the MacBook Pro notebook, Mac Pro scientific workstation, and Xserve server, you’ll find the high-performance 64-bit computing, advanced graphics, and scalable memory and storage capacity needed to handle your big data requirements
