The Road Less Travelled
« on: July 05, 2007, 04:13 PM »
It's a temperary name that may change once the story is posted.

This is the thread for my next short story, the second in a series of short stories that are used to follow the growth and adventures of Christopher Grim in the Jedi Order.

In the first story, "The Past meets the Present" we followed a group of Padawans on what was meant to be a small, easy mission. Of course, little in life is easy and the Padawans had to face a challenge far beyond there expectations.

In this story we have Christopher Grim recalling the events of a mission to a Jedi Enclave with Knight Zunin. What was supposed to be a simple recon mission became a battle between life and death. As if that was not enough, Christopher Grim runs into his greatest challenge of all. A 15-year-old girl named Ahna Thraxon.

::EDIT:: As I write this I'm finding out just hopw long it will be. I'm on Chapter 8, Page 9 (Microsoft Word) and just now am I reaching the climax, but I can't cut anything because it all goes to the story... I've posted Chapter 1 to get the ball rolling on this story and maybe draw some people into it.

Chapter 1

The Temple feels darker then normal to young Chris Grim as he sits in the waiting room of the Council Chambers.

He can hear indistinct voices through the door as he waits for his name to be called to defend his latest actions.

Sweat slowly rolls down his brow. His nerves are getting the best of him—he knows in his heart that he was right, but in his head that there is no way to fully explain his actions.

He hears footsteps approaching him and looks towards the elevators to see Jedi Sho’Hen approaching him.

He sits beside the Padawan and remains silent for a moment. He turns slightly and looks down at Grim, who is fixated on a spot on the floor, expressionless.

”You’ve really done it now, Chris.”

Chris closes his eyes for a moment and exhales. He looks up at Jedi Sho, but before he can answer the Council room doors open.

They both look towards the opening door as Knight Zunin begins to walk out.

The doors close behind him as he stops and looks at Chris. He looks back to the ground not willing to look at his Master.

”They are ready for you, Christopher.”

Chris’ eyes shift over to the door as he hesitates to stand. Slowly he rises to his feet and takes a deep breath.

Chris walks into the Council Chambers and the door shuts behind him.

”What will happen to him, Knight Zunin?” Jedi Sho asks.
”I don’t know. That is for the Council to decide now.”

-------------------------

The six members of the Council sit in the chambers surrounding Chris. The first time he has seen all six together, and it is an intimidating feeling to him.

Pausing at the door as it closes behind him, he looks at each of them individually for a moment, hoping to gain some sort of perspective on their feelings. The only thing he knows for sure is that they are not happy, and he is in serious trouble.

He walks to the center of the room and stands straight, hoping to make it seem that he is unafraid. The Council can see right through him, and he knows it.

”Christopher Grim,” Master Menelaos starts. “You are here today to explain your actions during your recent mission to the hidden Jedi Enclave.”

Chris stands there for a moment collecting his thoughts.

”Well, it happened like this…”

Chapter 2

Standing at the top of a cliff looking down over the hidden Jedi Enclave, Chris Grim and Knight Zunin Toku stand in silence. The trees around them rustle in the wind, the sound of the branches hitting one another fills the area.

”Master… Why are we on Endor exactly?” Chris Grim says breaking the silence.

”See that building down there?” Zunin asks looking at Grim. Grim raises an eyebrow looking at his Master. “Well, it is a hidden Jedi Enclave used, for the most part, by the Jedi Order to train younglings.”

”Younglings? Why?”

”Since the fall of the Jedi at the hands of Darth Vader and Sidious, the training of Padawans has changed.”

”Changed how?”

”Not all Academies are like JO. Some choose to send their Padawans to hidden enclaves like this. It’s a precaution in case there is ever another purge. This way, the Jedi will always live through their younglings if the main temples and enclaves are attacked.”

”If they are hidden and supposed to be a secret, how come we were sent here, Master?”

Zunin looks at his Padawan and chuckles. “Well, this particular enclave has not reported to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant in many months. So, our Council was contacted and asked to investigate.”

”Why were we sent? I’m hardly at the top of our Councils list of people to send on a mission… Not after last time.” Chris thinks back to the fight between himself and Mikeman and rubs his shoulder slightly.

“Still hurts?”

”Not a lot…”

”We were sent because of the type of Academy this is. It was easier to divide Padawans into classes based on their skills. This particular enclave is an Academy for future Jedi Guardians.”

”Fighters…”

”And since Jedi Sho’Hen is too old to be put here, you are the next best fight--”

”Thee best…”

”Sorry Christopher,” he says laughing slightly at his now frustrated Padawan. “Thee best.”

”So, what do I do?”

”You will enter the Academy as a new recruit. They are expecting you to enroll today. You will investigate the Academy and in three days you will report to me your findings.”

”What am I looking for?”

”Anything out of the ordinary that strikes you as odd behavior by the Council or any of the students. Remember, these are kids a lot like you. You’ll fit in flawlessly, so do not be nervous. Train with them, fight with them, but keep your eyes open.”

”Got it.”

”May the Fo—“

Christopher Grim stands and jumps off the ledge of the cliff falling and landing at the front of the enclave before Zunin can finish his sentence.

”Yeah… He’ll fit right in.”

Chapter 3

A tall Chistori male stands to greet Chris at the opening of the door of the enclave and Grim walks towards him looking up at him.

”Greetings tiny one.”

”I’m not tiny.” Chris snaps slightly at the vastly bigger beast. “I’m appropriately sized for my age.”

The Chistori cackles slightly and bends down. “You are a feisty one. You will do well here. Come, they’ve been expecting you.”

”So I’m told.”

The tall beast takes Padawan Chris further inside the enclave to the Council chamber. There, three adults are there waiting for him seated in chairs eerily similar to those at the Jedi Order. These are the only other adults he has seen since being greeted by the Chistori when entering the enclave.

On the far left sits a human male, his face covered with a red robe wrapped tightly around his head. He sits in a dark cloak that is slightly torn. “I am Master Jeph Tuyal.”

In the middle, a Zabrak male dressed in grey Jedi robe. He has a distinct scar over his left eye. He looks are Chris for a moment quizzically as if he to wonder if his potential was to be anything more then a five-foot tall, red-headed child with, “My name is Master Xisic Narruo.”

Finally, on the far right sit a human female. Her blond hair tied back into a not she wears a plain Jedi robe. She glares at him slightly, almost if offended by his presence. She turns her eyes away in disgust. ”Master Jennifer Thraxon,” she says sharply.

”You are Christopher Grim?” Master Tuyal asks.

”Yes.”

”You have been sent here by the Jedi Order to become a Jedi Guardian. And you are in luck.” He continues.

”Why do you say that?”

”In 2 days time we will be holding a youngling tournament. If before that time you prove you can be an adequate challenge to the other combatants, you will be admitted into the Tournament.” Master Narruo explains.

”If you win, you will be moved to the advanced training sessions. Few have been deemed good enough to enter the advanced sessions,” Master Tuyal interjects.

”That might be a big if,” Master Thraxon says smugly as she watches the Padawan for a reaction but is visibly disappointed when he does nothing.

”Jennifer that is not necessary… I’m sure this child will do fine,” Master Tuyal interjects. “For tonight you will sleep, tomorrow you will train and we will decide then.”

Chris nods slightly and walks out of the Council chambers. The door closes behind him while the Councilors sit in silence to watch him leave.

”What do you think of him?” Master Xisic speaks up.

”There’s an edge. He’s felt the dark side before.” Master Thraxon says. “He rejected it... It may cause problems.”

”I wouldn’t be too worried Jennifer,” Master Tuyal says with a smirk. “He will be fine.”

Chapter 4

Chris wakes from his slumber in his usual morning daze. His eyes take a moment to adjust before he finally can see his surroundings again. He slowly rises out of bed and puts on his robes. Looking in the mirror he fixes his hair and stares at the reflection of his eyes.

’What are you doing here?’ he thinks to himself. He collects himself and walks out the door. He glances around for a second and begins to take his first step toward the main training area when the sound of saber clashes catches his attention.

He begins walking down a long hallway to his left as the saber clashes become more distinct the further.

He looks around to make sure he isn’t being watched by anyone. He focuses on the door of the room closing his eyes momentarily. He opens them quickly and initiates his force sight. Using it to look inside the room he sees a lone figure training with battle bots.

He walks into the room just as a bot falls to the floor. He looks up and as he does a saber come at his head. He narrowly dodges as it sticks into the wall beside him. He looks back at the person in the room and meets eye to eye with his would-be attacker.

A girl stands over the body of the fallen bot as it dematerializes. Her blue-green eyes fixated at Christopher as she pulls back the saber from the wall. Her robes are an odd shade of brown.

”I don’t like an audience while I’m training,” she says pushing aside her short blond hair.

”Who does?” Grim responds with a smirk.

She eyes him for a minuet as he begins to feel uncomfortable. He can’t help but notice the girl is cute as they stand eye to eye. And while she has just tried to kill him, it’s all he can think about right now. He feels like he’s beginning to blush so he looks away from her and to the ground at her feet.

”You’re the new kid?”

”Yeah, I guess I am.”

”Hm. I can’t believe they let someone with such little obvious talent in here…” The words cut Chris like a knife. He holds himself back from yelling or charging at her. “Well, it is nice to meet you. Now get out.”

Not wanting to cause a scene his first day he begins to walk out of the room, but stops short of the door.

”What’s your name?”

She stays silent for a moment while she looks at him confused as to why he would ask after what she’d said to him. ”None of your business.”

Grim swings back around with a smile. “Make you a deal. We duel, and if I beat you—you tell me your name.”

”And when I win?”

”You won’t.”

She turns around and walks to the chair at the end of the room behind her. She smirks slightly trying not to laugh at the awkward red-head standing across the room. She picks up a training saber and ignites it. The late in the room fades slightly filling with the green glow of the saber.

”We’ll see.”

Chapter 5

The girl lunges across the room at Chris as he waits to do anything. She runs with incredible speed cutting through the air without a sound. Chris jumps back onto the wall and pushes off it, jumping over the girl.

He lands and quickly ignites his blade. He swings around at the girl who has already begun moving and is not where he expected her to be. She jumps at him with an overhead swing but Chris blocks it and pushes her back. He digs his foot in and pushes off at her but she sees him coming and dodges quickly.

He chases her as she wall runs around the room, step by step getting higher on the wall. She dives off and rolls on the floor and springs up to her feet. She looks in front of her but can’t find Chris.  Hearing a scream she looks up to see him attempting with a Yellow style aerial attack.

Not able to fully gain her balance she jumps back to dodge the attack but slams into a wall smacking her head against the drywall causing it to crack and crumble slightly.

She slumps to the floor and reaches for the back of her head. She pulls her hand back to the front of her face to see blood.

Chris turns off his saber and walks to the girl. She starts to slide away from him but he grabs her arm and stops her from moving any further.

”Hey, slow down. I’m going to help you with that.”

”I’m fine,” she insists trying to push Chris away.

”So says the two-inch gash on the back of your head.” He touches it causing her to squirm a bit. Chris chuckles softly, “stay still.”

He channels the force into his hand and begins healing her wound. The blood stops flowing and the cuts close leaving only dry blood in her hair behind. ”How do you feel?”

She takes a breath and looks up at him. She smiles a bit looking into his eyes. He smiles back. Suddenly she gets frustrated for having to have Grim help her and pushes him aside as she stands.

‘I didn’t ask for your help,” she says as she starts to walk out of the training room. “Learn to mind your own business or you won’t make it here.”

”Hey, wait… You owe me your name.”

She stops momentarily in the door frame before continuing to walk away, “Ahna.”

”You’re welcome… Ahna,” he calls out to her as the door shuts.

Chris sits down on the floor looking up at the wall where he head connected. He stares, fixated on it for a while, playing their short battle in his head.

The door opens. Master Thraxon walks into the room looking at Chris on the floor, wearing the same disgust on her face as the previous day.

”Alright kid, you’ll fight tomorrow,” she says before exiting the room again.

Chapter 6

The air is thick, the temple lively as Padawans train for their chance to impress the Council and move to the advanced training of the enclave. The Council chambers are dark as the three Masters sit embraced in the shadows.

”Is everything prepared?” Master Xisic asks, his face shrouded in darkness.

Master Thraxon smirks,”yes. They have all been entered into the tournament.”

”And the new one?”

”He somehow managed to pass his test; so he will be in the tournament.”

”Good,” Master Tuyal says. “Let’s hope he is as good as we hope he is. He could be very valuable to our plans for the Jedi.”

”Are you sure? He’s a child with very little ability,” Master Thraxon asks, the distain reeking on her voice.

”He fought well against your sister, Jennifer.”

”You’re underestimating this child,” Master Xisic interrupts. “He’s faced the dark side and managed to pull away, so his will is strong. He’s fought Mikeman Brizit, who was once one of the brightest young Guardians we’ve ever seen, and survived.”

”In short, he has talent,” Master Tuyal says.

”In short, he got lucky not to die Master,” she snaps back.

”And that is what makes him truly dangerous.

Chapter 7

Chris lays atop of the enclave starring at the Endor night sky, the stars acting as a constant reminder of how vast the universe is, and how far he is from home. He takes a deep breath and holds it for a moment to listen. The silence of the night is broken by the sound of someone jumping to the top of the Enclave.

Chris smiles and exhales, ”Shouldn’t you be recovering, little girl?”

”Shouldn’t you have been expelled by now, little boy?” Ahna replies standing behind him with a smirk.

”You’d be amazed how many times I’ve thought that very thing.”

She walks beside him and sits down looking at him with a smile. “Why are you still awake? Big day tomorrow.”

”I don’t sleep the night before a Tournament.”

”Won’t that just make you really tired?”

”Keeps me focused. I win more when I’m focused.”

”You like to win?”

”I hate to lose.”

She lies down and rests her head next to his. He looks over at her, and she at him as they smile and then quickly look back up at the sky.

”Which one’s yours?” she asked.

He looks around the night sky for a moment before pointing into it. “I’d be from somewhere in that general direction. Planet called Naboo.”

”What’s it like?”

”Beautiful.” Chris pauses for a moment thinking of his planet, his family and friends… Trevan. He clenches his first at the thought of Trevan and the fight he had with Mikeman. He relaxes a bit trying to immerse himself in the moment, “What about you? Where are you from?”

She glances the night sky but only frowns, “mine is a little further away. I was born on Telos, my sister left before I was born, but when I turned eight she heard I was training to become a Jedi… So, she sent for me to come here immediately.”

”Sister? Who’s your sister?”

She pauses for a moment looking at Chris, “ Master Jennifer Thraxon.”

”Master Thraxon is your sister? Wow…”

”I get that a lot.”

“When did she bring you here?”

”About four-years ago.”

”Four-years? That seems a little long to be here in this training.”

”She says that there are important things for she and I to accomplish here together. She says that there are great things to be done by me staying here.”

”Like what?”

”I don’t know. She says that with me the Council of this place can help bring great things to fruition.”

”Ominous.”

”My sister.”

They both laugh and Grim sits up and holds his knees. He looks to the sky once more before standing. “I think it’s time you go to bed.”

”Really?”

”Yes. Let’s go,” he says gesturing to opening of the temple. Ahna begins to stand and Grim grabs her hand to help her up.

”How’s your head, by the way?”

She looks at him with a glare before pushing him. Chris stumbles back to the end of the roof and falls falling 40-feet to the ground landing on his feet and looking back to the roof.

”Sorry…”

Chapter 8

Master Jeph Tuyal takes to the center of the dueling room begins addressing the room of Padawan's as they eagerly await the announcement of the finalists.

”Well Padawan's!” Master Tuyal bellows. “We are at the final round. And what a great surprise we’ve had this time as our newcomer Padawan Christopher Grim has defied all conventional logic and came out of nowhere to make it into the finals.”

The crowd roars at the mention of Christopher who has won over the masses.

”His opponent… None other then Ahna Thraxon.” The Padawan's erupt at the mention of her name, as if Chris has already become a distant memory.

Chris fights the urge to cheer for his new found friend as the edges onto the mat preparing for their fight.

They look across the sparring mat at one another, their eyes meet for a moment, this time not as friends but as combatants.

”This will be a one win final. And, like all of the all the Championship Finals before it… It is no holds barred.”

Chris stands firm at the edge of the mat, sweat running down his face, his hair falling in front of his face, clothes dripping as he prepares himself for his tenth fight of the day.

Fatigued he stands gripping his saber looking this girl he’d come to befriend as he prepares to fight her.

”Let’s begin!”

The two ignite their sabers to face one another in combat one last time.

Chris digs his foot into the mat and crouches low before pushing off and charging at Ahna as she does the same. They meet in the middle with a loud clash of their sabers and skid to a stop on the opposite sides of the mat.

They don’t wait to come to a stop before charging back at one another. Meeting once again in the center they skid to a stop and face eye to eye with one another. Ahna slashes at Chris’ head but he ducks and springs up into the air. Flipping to catch his balance he lands as she charges at him.

Unable to catch his balance he uses her momentum against her and slides to his left as she runs by him. Her frustration mounts as she stops and charges back at Chris. She swings downward at his head; Chris swings up with all his strength and knocks her saber back sending her off balance.

She spins around trying to regain some balance as Chris lunges at her, his saber hitting the ground before swooping up at her. Ahna jumps, diving to back just narrowly escaping the blade. She regains her footing and once again swings downward at Chris. He blocks but she takes the opportunity to kick him in the stomach catching him off guard.

He falls backwards and somersaults trying to get back to his feet. He hears her running at him so instead he slides on his knees and kneels upright.

Running she drags her saber beside her swinging the saber from her right hand. Chris shifts his body sliding it on the ground. He tries to pin her saber down with his but the force of her blow knocks his saber back.

With his saber out of the way she slams hers towards the ground, atop Chris’ head. Chris pivots his foot and somersaults out of the way getting back to his feet and jumping to the sky as high as he can manage.

He flips in the air and finds his opponent before landing and attempting an attack of his own. Landing he pushes himself off the ground and lunges at her once again, his saber dangling beside him as he runs at her.

She attempts a side swing at him, he drops to his knees sliding across the mat and bending backwards. The saber narrowly misses him. He pulls himself back and swings back at her feet, she hops in the air as his saber slides under her. Spinning himself around he gets to just one knee and Ahna flips back ten feet and the two stare at one another.

Breathing hard they both stop for a moment trying to figure out the situation.

’How do I beat her? She’s just as fast as me, just as athletic.” Chris wipes the sweat from his brow before standing on two feet again.

”Hey, Ahna… Done yet?” Chris yells across the mat with a cocky smile firmly imprinted on his face.

He can see Ahna grow more and more frustrated. She begins breathing harder, almost hyperventilating. Chris decides this is his chance and begins charging at her.

She looks at him, her eyes cutting right through him. The windows of the temple begin to rattle slightly as she corks her body. A big flash and a popping sound is unleashed in the dueling room as Chris is stopped in his tracks before being thrown backwards.

He slides along the ground rolling as he comes to a stop nearly twenty feet from where he was. He slowly gets to his knees and looks at his chest. His clothes are slightly burnt, smoking a little.

”Lightning?” he says in disbelief looking at his chest and then back up to the girl. He struggles to understand how she could have learned this attack.

He pulls himself to his feet, running his hands through his hair trying to comprehend everything.

”Why have you stopped Chris?”

Chris doesn’t know how to respond. Standing across from him is not the girl he thought he’d known, but an angry, violent person full of dark-side power.

’Has she fallen to the dark-side, or does she just know how to use the power?’ he wonders to himself. He doesn’t sense evil in her, but he can’t be sure.

Looking around he notices no one is moving—as if they have seen this before. He understands now that the Padawan's are being taught dark-side power, but he cannot sense evil in them. They have the power, but they are not evil.

”Ahna, who taught you that move?”

”Who else? My sister.”

Chris is at a loss. Can he fight her while she’s in this state, using those powers?

She charges after Chris not giving him the chance to figure it out.

Chapter 9

She closes in on him, saber drawn as her body cuts through the air. Chris takes a deep breath and prepares himself for what could very well be his last stand.

She gets within ten feet before coming to a complete stop and sudden stop. She doesn’t understand as she looks around and to the ceiling. Chris is in shock, why did she stop? Slamming her saber in front of her she reveals a force field between Chris and herself.

”Christopher, we’re leaving!” Knight Zunin says as he lands beside Chris. “I’ve seen enough.”

”Where did—“

”I’ve watched the whole fight latched to the ceiling… It’s time we leave, that force field will not hold much longer…”

The two begin running towards the exit. Chris comes to a stop and turns around. He takes one last look at Ahna and closes his eyes in pain, no physical pain but the kind felt when your heart has been ripped out. He turns and continues running out the Enclave door.

-------------------------

Halfway between their ship and the enclave, Knight Zunin and Chris have set up camp for the night. With no one following them Master Zunin has decided to let Chris take time off to relax after his tough day of dueling.

But tonight is not a night for sleep, not for Christopher.

He lies on the ground starring up at the cluster of stars Ahna had pointed to just the night before. He keeps replaying the days events in his mind, trying to find something that he missed that could have warned him. How could he have missed it all that time? How did he not know they were training Padawans in the dark side?

”What will happen to you now?” he whispers to the night sky. He worries what will happen to the Padawans of the enclave. What is the Councilors plan for them? What great things was Ahna talking about?

He sits up grabbing his feet before standing up. He looks back at Knight Zunin who is asleep in his tent…

”I’m sorry, Master. I have to do this.” Chris grabs his saber off the ground and takes off running back towards the enclave. As the dust settles Knight Zunin opens his eyes, woken by the rustling of the trees.

Sitting up he finds that Chris is gone, and immediately knows where he has gone.

”Chris, what are you going to do?”

Chapter 10

Arriving back at the enclave Chris summons his force sight to look inside. Nothing out of the ordinary, it’s almost as if they aren’t worried about Chris and Zunin leaving at all.

He jumps to the room and finds his way across it until he stands above Ahna’s room. Igniting his saber he stabs it into the ceiling cutting a hole big enough for him to fall through. Using force pull he pulls the slab up before it can fall and make a noise. He jumps down landing silently, looking around the room.

He quickly walks up to Ahna grabbing his shoulder. She wakes up suddenly and goes to speak but Chris covers her mouth.

”Shh. We have to go, now.” He uncovers her mouth and she stays quiet, turning to collect some of her things. “We have to get your stuff and let’s go.”

”Why are we leaving?”

”Ahna, this is not a Jedi Enclave,”

”Sure it is. My sister is a Jedi.”

”No, she is not. This is not a Jedi Enclave and we have to go.”

”I don’t believe you.”

Chris snaps back at her, “Jedi do not use Dark Force powers. And they definitely don’t release the anger you did during out fight.”

”But Jennifer says…”

Chris cuts her off sharply, “she’s lying to you. You are not being trained to be a Jedi. I don’t know what she’s doing.” He finishes collecting her things and grabs her arm pulling her to the hole in the roof. “Jump up here, we’re going to my ship with my Master and leaving this planet.”

She looks at him but decides not to argue. She jumps through the hole and Chris throws her stuff to her. He jumps through the hole following her but as he lands three saber blades are pointed at his neck.

”Predictable child,” Master Thraxon says with a smirk on her face.

”I told you, sister. I told you he would come back for me.”

Chris’ eyes widen in shock. Ahna, the girl he had trusted, had fallen for has turned her back on him and set him up.

”Don’t look so surprised Christopher. We trained her well,” Master Tuyal explains. ”Let’s take him to the force cage, and deal with him in there.”

Chapter 11

Sitting in a force cage Chris runs through the series of events leading him to this moment. He sits in shock that Ahna had turned on him. He knows he should have seen it coming, but he didn’t want to. He doesn’t understand the feelings he is encountering.

The door to the force cells open and the enclave Council walks into the room, they stand in front of Chris’ cell watching him as he refuses to lift his head to acknowledge them.

”Don’t look so sad,” Master Thraxon says mockingly. “Did you really think my sister was going to just leave?”

”What are you planning?” Chris demands raising his head.

”Oh, child. That is none of your business, now is it?”

”No.” Master Narruo says with a diminutive smile on his face. “We can tell him.”

Master Tuyal steps towards the cage,” We were sent here by our Master to take over the enclave on Endor and turn the Padawans into a fighting force unlike anything the Jedi have ever seen.”

”Why?”

”Why? Because the Jedi turned their back on him when they exiled him from the Order, and turned their back on all of us when they removed us from our duties in our temples and stashed us away here.”

Master Thraxon butts in, “the Jedi need to be taken care of once and for all and they need to be humbled from their high horses.”

”What are you talking about? What does this have to do with the Padawans?”

”They will become our fighting force to go against every Jedi enclave. We will destroy the Jedi one temple at a time.”

Master Narruo smirks at Chris for a moment, “and you will lead it.”

Chris jumps to his feet and walks to the door of the cage, “I’m sorry, care to run that by me again?”

”It’s true,” Master Thraxon interjects. ”You will be at the front of our army.”

”What makes you think, for just one moment—“he’s cut off before he can finish his sentence.

”It was foretold by our Master."

"Mikeman!"

She laughs at him, "Mikeman? No, someone much more powerful. The person he works for. We cannot completely convert these Padawans to the dark side—they don’t have it in them to fully turn. You, on the other hand, you have been touched by the dark side.”

Chris flashes back to his recent mission. Flashing in his head is the memory of Padawan Drake killing him, and the mysterious omnipotent being bringing him back to life through the dark side of the force. He remembers how hard it was to breath and how he was told that he was likely to fall by the being that came to help.

”I didn’t choose that.”

”It doesn’t matter. You are the only Padawan here who has been taken by the dark side. It was in you long before your death and will remain in you long after Drake brought you back. You are not like the others, and you know it. You were chosen by our Master to lead his army.”

”I won’t.”

”You will. Or we kill Ahna,” Master Thraxon says with a cackle.

”You would kill your own sister?”

”She has reached the end of her usefulness now that we have you. She never could fully give into the dark side. She had the opportunity to kill you on more then one occasion, and she didn’t take it. She wouldn’t have killed you even during your duel. She grew weak the moment she grew feelings for you. Now, she will never fully embrace her destiny. So, we have changed her destiny.”

”But… She can be saved… If you join us,” Master Narruo says.

Chris stands in silence, wanting to break through the cage and kill the Masters where they stand, wanting to give up everything to keep his friend safe… But, knowing there is nothing he can do. He sits back down and remains quiet.

”We’ll leave you here to think about it.”

Chapter 12

It’s been hours since the councilors of the hidden enclave spoke to him, and Chris lays on the floor in a daze. He cannot wrap his head or his heart around the betrayal he is feeling.

He wants to hit something but there is nothing to hit. He wants to run away until he can’t anymore, but there is nowhere to run. He is at a loss.

The door to the force cells begin to rattle slightly. He stands up to look at them expecting to see the councilors walk through it once again. The door crashes open but to his surprise it is not the council who walks through, but Knight Zunin.

”Well, isn’t this an interesting sight?” Knight Zunin says, but without even so much as a smile.

”Yeah, always knew I’d end up like this.”

”Is everything a joke with you?”

”Is everything a lecture with you?”

”You never listen to anyone, Christopher. It’s going to get you expelled from the Jedi Order or worse… killed.”

”If that’s my destiny, then fine. All I want is to get Ahna out of this enclave, finish what I started with Mikeman, and live to see my Jedi trials… The rest is just… a bonus.”

”You’re either crazy or suicidal,” Zunin slams the release button to the force cage and the shield drops.

Chris smirks looking up at his Master, ”can’t I be both?”

”We have to get out of here.”

“Not without Ahna, I have to get her.”

”I’ve looked, she is with the Council, you cannot reach her.”

Chris starts walking towards the door in a hurry. “I have to try.”

”Then you will fail!” Chris stops at the door suddenly. He doesn’t turn around to face his Master. “If you try and take on the Council then you will fail, and she will die anyways.”

”I need to try.”

”You don’t get it. You’re 13-years-old. You’re a Padawan, a talented one, yes, but nowhere near their level.”

”I’ve taken on older people before.”

”Yes, Masters with training sabers.”

”Mikeman was neither a Padawan nor a Master with a training saber”

”He had potential to be the greatest fighter this era of Jedi had ever seen, sure, but when he left the Jedi Order he hit his plateau.” Zunin walks behind his Padawan and rests his hand on his shoulder. “You are not ready for this.”

”I’m all that’s left.”

”We can get the Jedi Order, we can come back.”

”That will take weeks, maybe months.”

”And if we go now, we die.”

“If that happens,” Chris turns around looking up at his Master with a big smile. “Then JO will be here in hours.”

Chapter 13

Rushing to the council chambers Chris cuts through the halls of the temple. The come to a skidding stop outside the chamber doors.

Chris is breathing hard, not from the run but from the adrenaline. The only thing standing between him and the defining moment of his life is a steel door, and he knows it.

”I want to do this alone.”

Knight Zunin looks down at his Padawan confused, “you know I can’t let you try that. It won’t work, you’ll be slaughtered.”

”When I get my chance to grab her, I’m going to take it.”

”And if that chance doesn’t happen.”

”Then I make it happen.”

”Good answer.”

Chris opens the door and steps inside quickly. Standing at the left side of the door is Master Tuyal, on the right is Master Narruo and in the center of the room stands Master Thraxon and Ahna.

He looks to both sides but they don’t seem to be moving to stop him. He walks past them and stands a few feet inside the door, and only fifteen from her.

Knight Zunin begins to walk but the two Masters ignite their blades and hold Zunin back.

”Just you and me Chris, just you and me,” Master Thraxon says with a grin.

”You… You call me Grim.”

She ignites her saber and holds it to her sister’s neck. Ahna’s eyes widen as she sees the blade inches from her neck. “What are you doing?”

”I’m making him make a decision. He has to decide now, join us—or lose you.”

Ahna begins breathing harder and her eyes begin to swell slightly as she realizes she has been betrayed by her own sister.

”Chris…” she whispers, both out of fear and out of shame. Realizing that the only person there to save her is the one she’d betrayed.

”You’re making it out of this, I promise.”

Master Thraxon cackles at Chris, she looks at him in a patronizing manner, “oh child, neither of you will make it out of here unless you join us.”

Chris ignites his saber and takes a step closer to the sisters. “I’d much rather fight you then join you.”

”Foolish child! Gambling with not only your life but hers too? Looks like you’ll need some persuading.” Master Thraxon turns her sister around and slams her saber into her shoulder. Ahna screams in pain, coughing blood and collapsing to her knees. Jennifer pulls the saber from her should and pushes her sister over.

Chris’ breathing becomes deep and quick, his eyes glaze over slightly as tears fill his eyes.

”Chris, do not give in,” Knight Zunin yells. Master Tuyal punches Zunin in the face trying to shut him up.

Chris grips his saber as hard as he can, so hard that his hand begins to bleed. Blood begins dripping to the ground. He pivots his foot against the ground preparing to make a charge.

His eyes flicker, from its normal brown to a shade of yellow and back again, but as it does his shoulder begins to burn causing him extraordinary pain. Knight Zunin can see the Padawan bubbling over in anger but is helpless to do anything.

Chris pushes off and races at the Master standing in the middle of the room. He lunges at her, his feet leaving the ground, she easily sidesteps his attack.

He turns around swinging wildly at the Master, but she keeps ducking his attacks, not even using her saber. He keeps swinging but she won’t attack back. His frustration mounts.

”You’re too weak to hit me Grim,” she says dodging another attack. “You’ll never be strong enough as a Jedi. You know what you’ll have to do—are you willing to do it to save her?”

He continues attacking at the air, not coming close to hitting her. He knows he can’t hit her, he knows he is no match, but he can’t use the alternative. If he does, there is no turning back.

After nearly a minuet of dodging his frivolous attacks Thraxon grows bored and begins her attacks. Easily overthrowing Chris’ defense she disables his saber and force pushes him to the floor. He tries to sit up but she puts her foot on his chest and keeps him down on the ground.

”You are pathetic. You could have joined us, but you wouldn’t. You could have given into your anger completely, but you wouldn’t. You could have saved her life… And you—“

”Succeeded.”

”Are you crazy? What is wrong with you? You’ve lost!”

Chris smiles looking up at the women standing over him and laughs slightly, “I’m not done yet.”

Master Thraxons’ eyes widen as she hears the saber ignite behind her. She turns around to find her little sister standing behind her, blade ready. Christopher pulls himself to his feet, grabbing his blade and igniting it once again.

Master Thraxon cackles as she prepares to fight the two young Padawans. She swings her saber with her right hand at Ahna, then spins around to attack Chris, both Padawans deflect the attack and jump back, out of striking distance.

The Padawans circle Master Thraxon before jumping at her, they take turns attacking as the Master uses her acrobatic ability to dodge and evade the attacks.
The clashing of sabers acts like music filling up the chambers in a symphony of noise and sparks. The Padawans flip around the Master trying to throw her off balance but she stands firm in her defense.

The Padawans quickly begin to fade as their energy levels drop, neither having fully recovered from the previous day’s tournament.

Thraxon takes the opportunity to continue her assault on Chris. She swings at his head, but he ducks it. She’s relentless in her attacks at him, he can’t find his footing long enough to dodge them with any fluency.

Her saber misses by only centimeters and continues getting closer with every swing.  He knows he is running low on time and tricks.

He uses the wall to propel him forward as her saber slams into it, just barely missing his foot. Ahna’s injuries stop her as she drops to a knee clutching her shoulder. She is not able to keep up with them as Chris moves at his top speed and she follows suit.

She pauses in the center of the chambers watching them fight along the outside wondering how long before Chris is killed, or worse is pushed over his edge.

Chris dives off the wall and begins a controlled slide on his knees, twisting around and swinging upwards as Master Thraxon swings down. Their sabers clash in an explosion of light. Her saber is pushed back, he spins around to his feet and stands firm awaiting his foe’s next move.

”This is a pointless battle. You are nothing more then a child.”

”I get enough lectures from my Masters at the Academy, I don’t need one from you,” Chris replies entering his stance and preparing for what may come next.

With a smirk she reenters her fighting stance, “I can see why our Master likes you so much. You’re feisty… It’s too bad you’re too cocky for your own good.”

”You talk far too much for your own good, you know that?”

She grunts and takes off after Chris, she begins swinging at him with no thought to the attacks, just as fast and as hard as she can with the only intent to kill.

Chris tries his best to avoid the attacks but his body is giving way. He can hardly manage to move let alone dodge with any certainty.

She gets him falling backwards his feet lose traction and his balance wanes. He falls backwards hitting the ground. He tries to roll back but before he can lift his legs he has a saber once again firmly positioned in his face.

”You should have joined us. Now, your potential will go to waste.”

She pulls back her saber but her eyes widen. She gasps as blood begins to pour out of her mouth. Looking down she finds a saber sticking through her stomach. The saber is turned off as she turns around, “Ahna?”

She sees behind her Ahna stands with no emotion on her face, her saber in hand, and her wound only bleeding slightly.

She collapses to her knees, holding her stomach. Chris stands up walking in front of the wounded Jedi. “As I said. You’ve lost.” He turns around and begins walking towards Knight Zunin and the council room door.

”I will kill you!” Thraxon ignites her blade and pulls it back to swipe at her sister once more. Chris ignites his blade, spinning around he swipes at the wounded Jedi.

Her lifeless body collapses to the floor as Chris turns off his blade. Spinning back around he continues walking towards the door. The two remaining councilors prepare for the young Padawans standing side by side.

Narruo takes a step forward before the Council door opens. They spin around as Master Menelaos, Alpha, and Lei burst through the door, sabers drawn.

”Are we late?” Master Menelaos asks putting a saber to Tuyal’s throat.

”No… Right on time,” Chris says dropping to a knee, the sweat dripping like a fountain off his face pooling on the ground.

The Masters look around the chambers, surveying the scene.

”This is going to be a great story,” Master Lei remarks looking at Chris on the floor, only feet away from the decapitated corpse of Master Thraxon.

Chapter 14

It’s been two days since Chris and Ahna fought Jennifer Thraxon. Shuttles have arrived to ship the Padawans back to the Jedi Temple.

Chris sits on top of the enclave watching as the Padawans ship onto the shuttles, the Masters take roll call and the ships are prepared to leave.

Chris has finally healed enough from the battle to get around on his own, a day and a half of nothing but the walls of a med bay, recovering from extreme dehydration. All the while he had Ahna to keep him company, and now he dreads the moment she will leave.

He holds his breath for a moment to listen to his surroundings. He hears the sound of the trees rustling, the wind howling, and footsteps coming from behind him.

”You fought well, Chris.”

Chris turns around and looks up at his Master standing beside him.

”I fought well enough to keep her alive, but not well enough to keep her.”

Knight Zunin sits down in front of Chris looking his Padawan in the eyes, watching as he is unable to keep his eyes up.

”Growing up is hard. We lose things, we lose people. The life of a Jedi is sacrifice.”

”If I follow her, if I go with her wherever she goes I can make sure she’s safe.”

”You could.”

”All that awaits me is a very angry Council back at the Jedi Order Temple.”

”What makes you say that.”

Chris looks at his Master for a moment, “I’m not dense. I know they know I defied direct orders from my Master, overstepped my mission boundaries, almost got both of us killed. Let’s face is Master, I’ve made my bed.’

”It’s true; you’ve made a lot of mistakes on this mission.” He pauses for a moment taking a deep breath, “do you think you made the right decision?”

”I do. I did the only thing I thought I could.”

”Now you’re lying. You know you had options. You acted as you did because of your feelings for her. You love that girl.”

”Jedi don’t love. They aren’t allowed.”

”Are you sure about that?” he asks standing up and walking to the ledge of the enclave. He turns his head back around slightly, “Jedi can love. But, it’s no excuse to defy orders.”

He jumps off the roof landing on the ground below. Chris sits atop the building as he sees Ahna walk towards one of the ships. She turns back to look at him, his eyes fixate on hers. She smiles at him and waves. He smiles back, a smile mixed with his happiness, and his pain. He is not sure if this is the last time he’ll see her.

Chapter 15

Standing at the top of a cliff looking down over the hidden Jedi Enclave, two men stand in silence. The trees around them rustle in the wind, the sound of the branches hitting one another fills the area. Voices can be heard, the voices of the Padawans walking onto the ship.

”He had an impressive showing, Master. He didn’t win, but he managed to stay alive against one of your better followers.”

”He’s growing rapidly… in ability and stubbornness just like his mother. Any other Padawan would have cracked under the pressure and turned to the dark side.”

”He will someday.”

”You may be right, Mikeman, but he is becoming too much of a threat for us to hope he turns. If he doesn’t fall he may destroy us and halt our plans.”

”He is not that good, Master.”

”Not yet. But, he may become that good. Every day he will grow stronger as he tries to become strong enough to defend his mother, and now that girl from us. His ability rivals yours at his age—but unlike you, he will stay in the Order long enough to complete his training.”

”Should we kill them both then? His vile mother and the girl? Would that make him fall?”

”No. That would only make him more determined. We would lose him for sure, and he will undoubtedly grow up powerful enough to destroy us.”

”What should we do?”

”There’s nothing we can do. We wait for him to put it all together and figure out who we are and the past. We wait for him to grow up, reach his potential—then you and I will have the fight of a lifetime.”

”Until then?”

”Until then we watch him and we prepare for him.”

Chapter 16

Padawan Chris finishes his story to the Council and stands in silence waiting for them to speak to him. He can tell they are talking through the force, he can tell they are saying more then he can even imagine.

”Padawan Christopher Grim,” Master Alpha starts. “Do you understand what you have admitted to?”

”Yes, Master.”

”You willfully disobeyed your mission parameters, disobeyed orders from your Master, put the lives of yourself and your Master in great danger. You’ve even admitted to nearly falling to the dark side, which…we must say troubles us,” Master Menelaos dictates to the Padawan.

”Yes, Master.”

”Christopher, you must understand that there has been much doubt about your alledience to the Jedi Order since joining this academy. Even something as small as what you claim, as small as a temporary impulse, is cause for concern,” Master Ekul continues.

”Knight Zunin believes your eyes may have even flickered,” Master Tyrael added.

”I wouldn’t know, Master. It’s all a bit hazy at this point.”

”Do you think this is a joke?” Master Achilles snaps at the Padawan.

”No, Master.”

”Christopher, what are we going to do with you?” Master Menelaos asks visibly frustrated with the Padawan. “You are hereby suspended from the Jedi Order.”

Chris looks at the Council in confusion. Why have they let him stay at all he wonders?

”Now, leave.”

He bows to the Council and exits the chambers. The Council waits for him to leave, the door shuts behind him once again.

”Why can’t we just expel him?” Master Achilles questions the other members of the Council.

Master Ekul turns his attention to Master Achilles, ”If he leaves now, while he’s this young, this unprepared, he will certainly fall, or worse die at the hands of Mikeman or his Master,”

”Some good did come out of this mission,” Master Menelaos jumps in. “Many Padawans were saved, traitors were apprehended, and we now know that Mikeman and his Master, Vroxil are in-deed watching every step Christopher takes.”

”Which means they are preparing to start their mission soon and will want him to join them to complete the trio they were foretold,” Master Alpha continues. “Chris has much maturing to do, and needs to grow up a lot before this battle takes place. He needs to be trained and he needs to find the answers he is lacking.”

”In short, he needs to stay in JO for the time being,” Master Ekul finishes.

”Once this is all over, once the battle is done, then will we decide if the Padawan is right to stay in the Jedi Order,” Master Menelaos says taking a breath. “May the Force be with us all.”
