Sweeney Todd
« on: January 07, 2008, 06:47 AM »
ok, so in my opinion Tim Burton is one of the best,, the quality of angles, dynamic shot, lighting, filters, set up, just everything is usually excelent....

In this case the tale of a man who was done wrong and is now back for vengance. He allies with a woman who has long been a fan of his and they go to town killing like crazy by cutting throughts of those who come for a shave....

This is the plot of what could have been and amazing dark tale. a good creepy and bloody dark movie,.  I dont know if you guys have seen it, but i was thrown of after i sat down, when i found out it was a musical loosing all feeling of that dark vengfull sadistic feel i was expecting....

So i do say it was great, but could have been even better, what you guys think.

Sweeney Tod, the movie you just seen, is a theatrical production of the Sweeney Todd Play that has been on broadway and London Theatre since the 50's or more.  Its a very very old play and old story.  Musical from start to finish.   The one in the movies is only the first theatrical big screen release of it.  And, however, a musical it is, I think the cast couldn't have done any better than they did and I liked it better than the stage play... which I have seen both.

It was a good movie. However I felt as if I was watching Harry Potter at times with 3 of the 4 main characters being from them.

Didn't mind paying (or having my mom pay that is), but would not buy the DVD.

3 1/2 lightsabers out of 5.

as i understand sweeney todd, did not start as a theatrical play...

"Todd's first appearance could have been in a British penny dreadful called The People's Periodical, in issue 7, dated November 21, 1846. The story in which he appeared was titled "The String of Pearls: A Romance," and was written by Thomas Peckett Prest,[6] who created several other gruesome villains. He tended to base his horror stories partly on truth, sometimes gaining inspiration from real crime reports in The Times.

According to the English tale, Todd was tried at the Old Bailey and hanged at Tyburn in January 1802, in front of a large crowd. However, no record of the trial can be found in the Old Bailey sessions papers or the Newgate Calendar, nor are there any contemporary press reports either of the trial or of the hanging. As early as 1878, a contributor to Notes and Queries noted this absence of authentic non-fictional sources. It has also been rumoured that Todd fled to Forres, Scotland where he died and was buried in the local cemetery.[7] Peter Haining, while arguing for historical reality, does not offer verifiable specifics.[2]

Whenever Sweeney Todd himself first made his appearance, the conversion of the unsuspecting into meat pies was urban legend in the early 19th Century. In 1843, Tom Pinch is "particularly anxious ... to have those streets pointed out to him which were appropriated to the slaughter of countrymen" in Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens."

it then took addaptations into theater, and yes for what it was the casting was amazing. I didnt however like the horse like boy. but everything else was great. I dont mind what it was, i just say it could have had a darker feel to it. More of what the plot tries to show. i mean a barber gone mad, killing them his crazy ally how chops and cooks people up into meat pies.... seriously how evil could this have been.....

i expected to flinch a lot. but in turn i was not at all frightened by the characters at all....
