Trade Deadline 09
« on: March 04, 2009, 05:42 PM »
Anyone an NHL fan? How'd your teams fair in the Trade Deadline deals this season?

For me, it was more sad then anything. We're a terribly average team trading off players to get draft picks and goalies for no good reason. I have no idea why we got Kolzig at all, though I think it has to do with cap room and whatever. We signed Gerber to play in place of Toskala due to injuries. Traded Antropov and Moore for 2nd Round picks, and got a 4th rounder in the Kolzig deal. It sucks to see players leave but it's about time someone rebuilds properly.

Calgary came away on top IMO. Jokinen and Leopold are very good players to bring in to that team, especially with injuries. New York got a few players but I don't think they make the playoffs because it's too much to overcome (new coach, new players, Sean Avery). Montreal were the big losers. A struggling team needing to make a move to make a run in the playoffs... 0 moves... Carolina and Pittsburgh should be interesting down the stretch too.

Boston got Mark Recchi and Steve Mantador as far as I can remember. I don't think it's enough to push them to the top though. Not with Detroit, Calgary, San Jose, etc. Could still come out of the East but will have to beat Washington and Pittsburgh to do it... Along with a bunch of other teams I don't feel like discussing.

Kolzig was/is not ever meant to play for the Leafs.

Burke bought the 4th rounder off Tampa by taking on 500k of salary for the remainder of the year.

Gerber did well last night, but Vesa had just stopped 51 shots the game before, so makes me wonder how much he really needed to go under the knife now.

Hamilton (who's contract we bought of Chicago) scored a few goals in 2005/6 and will fill a roster spot, but is a joke of a pick up.

2 2nd round picks was the best we could have hoped all along anyway. All year long the Toronto media and fans have been trashing our players and their play. Include the coach and GM on the bashing and its no suprise we got next to nothing for our talentless players.

Calgary was the best for sure. But I liked what San Jose did (except with the trade with Philly...who gives away depth at defence?!?!).

New York picking up Avery and Antropov would be pointless except for the fact they got Tortorella (sp?) and he will kick some arse in that lockerroom.

Overall a rather boring trade deadline. It will only get worse with the salary cap.
