I quit my job today. I was pulling weeds (and doing other yard work but mostly pulling weeds) for 6 hours or more a day in 100+ degree temperatures (Georgia in summer) and he criticized how hard I was working. I would stay later than the other people working every day (they left around 11 or so and I left at 3:30) and actually tried to do a relatively good job (so everything wouldn't just grow back in a couple of days).
I asked my boss if I could do something else sometimes because of how boring it was and he responded saying my "production and body language" meant that I should stop working on the 15th after my last check. For one thing, he never once saw me working, so claiming anything about my body language is really stupid. I also never saw him around the area I was working (I was at a different site than where he worked about 5 miles away) so he is only going on what his wife said.
I'm not really that angry about losing the job (I was looking for an excuse to quit if I couldn't do something different anyway), but what he said to me made me really angry.
I sent him a nice long email in reply though. I also got to yell "I quit!" at someone (his wife who works there too) and then drive away really fast which was kinda fun.
-
Well.....post the email you sent man!!
Btw, good for you for quitting. Too many people being WAY too worried about jobs. Jobs are easy to find.
A career on the other hand is harder, but picking weeds? fudge that, I rather work at McDonalds to be honest.
You'll find something bro, and having the balls to quit will help you in the long run.

I said:
Mr. Fortier,
I was wondering if there is something I could do other than just pull weeds all the time.
Thank you,
Luke Anderson
He replied:
That's what I hired you for. I do think that it's not for you though. Its clear from your production and body language that you don't want to do it. Maybe its best if we call it quits on the 15th when your time will be paid through?
I then sent:
I quit.
I will not work for you another second after this. I don't understand how you can say anything to me about my "production and body language" after having NEVER seen me while I was working and without being at Riverview in order to see what I've done.
I worked every day until 3:30 in the hot sun (something that you're wife never does: She barely works past 11 usually, if she is even at work) and this is the thanks I get?
No hard feelings my ass. I have worked for at least 6 hours a day in 100+ degree temperatures every day since I started. I actually tried to do a good job getting the weeds entirely out so they wouldn't grow back.
You could never do my job and you have the arrogance to tell me I'm not working hard enough? I was pulling fucking weeds all day. Obviously I am not going to work as hard as I can. All I'm doing is bending over and standing back up all day, Its impossible to do that at 100% for 6 hours.
And what was wrong with my body language? I don't want to pull weeds for 6 hours a day, so I look unhappy. I think thats reasonable. I still did the job didn't I? You don't even have the slightest clue what my body language was, considering you were sitting in your nice air conditioned office, while I was working in the sun all day.
I have no respect for you after this.
Luke Anderson
I'm going to try to find something delivering pizza or something. Its not easy to find jobs, but its not too hard. Nothing like finding a new career.
I'm going to the beach next week, so that'll be nice. Then when I get back hopefully I can start something new.

call centers.
-
Nice one!
-
Why find another job? If you have evidence and you have witnesses of all the hard work you did, you could probably sue him and have him pull the weeds from your front yard for free. He insulted you and pretty much fired you for no reason other than ''you don't seem to look fit to me''.
If he really didn't want you to continue working there, he could of said it in another way.

;D haha That would be funny.
I was really angry about the way he said it and the way he essentially forced me out without having told me I needed to work harder or anything. If there was a problem, they should have told me when they realized it.
-
Did he reply to your last email?
Would love to see his response ;D

He said:
Luke,
I'm sorry you feel like you have to respond in such a poor manner. Let me be clear. My job is such that I have to trust my employees to relay information to me. This information I rely on is very important. It includes issue related to safety, security, and many other issues we won't take time to enumerate here. It is safe to say that these judgments are very important. The reports that I received from Matt at Riverview and Chris Bevel when you worked on the Pace Campus for that week, we're what I based my comment on. Additionally, I did observe you at Riverview the few times I was out there whether you know it or not. I would never lie to you.
Now, email is not a good thing. It lacks emotion and intent that you get from a face to face conversation. If you noticed, I put a question mark at the end of my suggestion about ending our relationship. I was being conversational and observant. I had hoped you would want to talk about the situation and see if we could come to a mutual decision. Yes, I do realize it is hot and uncomfortable. Thank you for your efforts in very trying conditions.
I have to tell you that in no way can I leave this conversation without telling you how poor your judgment is given your response. I know you are better than what your words say about your character. Your Dad has the most admirable character and it shows even in distressing times. You should take note and try and compose yourself before letting go with something like the tirade below.
I apologize if I have offended you. My intent was to try and help but I obviously failed so I will do better next time. I am not offended. I just want you to learn that this kind of thing will happen in life and its how we handle it that follows us long after the weed pulling is done! Good luck with the rest of your summer and I trust a good sophomore year soon to start.
Sincerely,
Mr. Fortier
and I replied:
Mr. Fortier,
From the way I was spoken to by your wife last week, and the tone I gathered from my email, my reply was justified. I felt as if you totally disregarded my work and efforts. That is the tone I picked up from your email. To me, when you said, "Its clear from your production and body language that you don't want to do it. Maybe its best if we call it quits on the 15th when your time will be paid through," it sounds as if you are calling me lazy and disrespectful or something. After all the hard work I've done, that makes me very angry.
I don't understand what Chris could have said to get you to fire me (and thats essentially what you did, even if you wanted it to be "mutual"). I only worked at Pace for about three days (if that) and I thought I did a good job. If there was a problem, you should have told me when you found out rather than telling me as you fired me. Obviously since you felt I didn't work hard enough, that is what Matt told you.
Obviously you have to trust them on things like safety, etc., but rather than say it was something that was clear, you could have said it was something you were told by others. I never saw you at Riverview, so I don't see how you would be close enough to judge my body language. I never accused you of lying because you didn't say you had been over there in the first place.
I'm not my dad. He always tries to avoid and resolve conflict (which makes him such a good principal), but I felt the need to stand up for myself. I sent my "tirade" because I felt I had to stand up for myself against what I thought was unfair. I do not feel that standing up for myself shows bad judgement or poor character.

He does have a point.

uhh.. wow. Well Ekul umm... wow. well good luck on finding a new job. Master mene is right to a degree. Depending on your area its not to hard to find jobs. Now finding a good job.... hahaha.. ya well who isnt looking for a good paying job you know? Find out what your experience is.. and regardless of if you got experience APPLY TO EVERYTHING.. unless it requires CDL's or a degree of a sorta. Good luck man, i dont blame ya for wanting to quit... sounds like the guy needs to learn management skills... i was a supervisor last year for a battery recycling plant.. and never ever have i found talking to somebody like that actually works... you show some one disrespect or ignorance like that neither will they want to work for you or listen to you.. obviously that guy needs to learn some decent leadership skills..
Well ekul if you were up here id put ya to work. btw i might have to look ya up next year.. riding my harley iron down to georgia next year to see some people ill have to swing by your area and meet ya.
-
Definitely let me know if you're down here! If its during the summer I'll probably be here. I'm at school in New Orleans in the spring (I'm taking the fall off to do some volunteer work).
I'm not really expecting a good job. haha But something would be nice.
-
ya i understand. Hey I went from being a supervisor of a battery factory making 26,000 a year to i work at rax now making if im lucky maybe 5-6,000... i make sandwhichs for a living. Any which way im thankful to have a job. im sure you'll find something, try looking at your local county jobs and family services.. they may have a website or bulletin board posting all jobs available.
Ya ill def. let you know. Maybe show me around a few place's never been there. My father has lived somewhere around savanna for about three years now. figured go visit him and a army buddy and now hopefully you. any good place's to drink down there.. beachside or view?

I'm not that familiar with Savannah (I live in Atlanta), but I've been down there a few times. Riverstreet is fun and there are bars and restaurants. If your father's lived there then he probably knows about it. Its nice because you're on the river and there are sometimes big boats and stuff.
-
Then you are fired!!

Menelaos
You can't fire me!!! You got voted out a couple seasons ago! :P

On a side note, how goes the job thing? Anything else from the ex-boss? How did your parents react?

Menelaos

Nothing else from him. My parents thought he handled the situation badly and weren't upset at me or anything, which was cool.
I think I'm going to be able to get a job at Papa John's delivering pizza starting the week of August 1. Thats what I thought I was going to be doing all summer, but it didn't work out.
