: The Future
: *<JO>*Ekul April 21, 2010, 03:52 PM
Obviously JKA has lost its appeal for most of us. We need a new game if we want to bring any kind of life back.

One game that is going to be released relatively soon (about a year probably) is Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO. I love playing MMOs and would love to play that game with JO. How many people here would be interested in playing The Old Republic? Unfortunately, there will probably be separate North American and European servers. We could play in both if we have the members.

How many people here are interested in playing the Old Republic (or some other game) with JO?

That should be a very interesting game when it is released. The questions I'd have for a clan such as this are:

-What opportunity would it give for advancement in this clan structure. What I mean is is JO doing away with their ranking system? It'd just be weird to have a Level 55 "Padawan" getting disciplined by an oft-inactive Level 12 "Master". Further, a lot of the role playing aspects of JO would be difficult to translate over to this new game, such as "missions", training, trials, etc.

-Since it is an mmo would JO limit their members to only play Jedi or would they allow for their members to play other, secondary characters away from JO so they could play as Sith or Bounty Hunters, or what have you? I'm just thinking it'd be unfair to make someone pay for an MMO but not allow them to play all sides of it, if they want.

-I can only assume it's a pay-to-play mmo so what would happen if members can't afford to buy or continuously pay for it? I'm just thinking that in today's economic climate not every JO member will be able to make the move over. Will they be asked to leave the clan if they cannot play? It seems to be a stupid question but I'm just assuming that if the majority of the clan is active in a new game the clan will reestablish it's activity rules.

Now, admittedly, I've been away for a long time and JO may have changed the way it does things and the way it works as a clan, I don't know. I'm just asking questions based on how the clan used to run. At the very least it could help JO identify some problems it could encounter if they do decide to use this game as the next level for the clan.

I don't think we would have to do away with our ranking system. If we weren't involved in PvP, we could be more RP as well as retaining some aspects of our current ranks. We could incorporate minimum rank requirements after a certain period of time (say 6 months or something after the game is released) so it isn't totally unbalanced. Missions would be easy. There will be hundreds of ready made quests. If there are persistent instanced quests, it would be really easy to do a large group RP through the mission. We would also get real, in-game rewards, in addition to the fun of RPing. I don't know about training as much, but we could use certain big quests as trials and have requirements about how many people can be in the group (say 2 padawans have to make it through something alone, which would require training with a more experienced master).

This is something we have to decide. I think that for JO we could have people who weren't Jedi. The Jedi Order had healers, crafters, and even farmers, so we could incorporate other professions. I don't think we should allow members to have secondary characters of the opposite faction on the same server that we play on. Most MMOs allow you to have different characters on different servers so they can be in different factions.

We may be able to retain a JKA server, if there is any desire. If not, we could let the existing JO members keep their ranks and remain members of the community. I don't want to ask anyone who is in JO to leave.

Now, admittedly, I've been away for a long time and JO may have changed the way it does things and the way it works as a clan, I don't know. I'm just asking questions based on how the clan used to run. At the very least it could help JO identify some problems it could encounter if they do decide to use this game as the next level for the clan.

Thank you for the questions, they help me think through things.

WTF is QFT?

: Re: The Future
: *<JO>*Ekul April 23, 2010, 08:52 AM
The downside of playing SW:TOR is the payment system. If its feasible, I'll probably play for a month to make sure I like the game, then buy a lifetime subscription if its not too expensive.

We could keep the JKA side of JO going until there is a new (not pay to play) game out too.

And Master Mene, QFT=quoted for truth.
: Re: The Future
: *<JO>*Menelaos April 23, 2010, 08:58 AM
Seriously?

Quoted for truth? That's not even a proper sentence/statement!!
How do you quote something 'for' truth??

He might as well have said... "I hear dat" and it would have been just as correct implaying he "heard" something he read!!

I have always been one to day I won't pay to play, and until I see something that is worth changing my mind, I will continue to think this way. Who knows, maybe they charge $5 a month and lets be honest, I spend more than that on the sushi I was craving that gave me a total of 10 mins of pleasure and then its gone!

It'll probably be $15 a month, but if you get a longer term deal, the price per month goes down.

: Re: The Future

Considering the server-running costs, it's understandable to charge per month.
: Re: The Future
: *<JO>*Rando Tantra April 24, 2010, 05:36 PM
Considering the server-running costs, it's understandable to charge per month.

This could be said about any game that uses any sort of servers that are run by the developer. IMO, the billions of dollars they've made off of selling the game and ingame items should be enough to keep the servers running.

-Rando
: Re: The Future
: *<JO>*Alpha April 24, 2010, 07:07 PM
Hmm, to be honest mate I doubt they've earnt billians. Also, 2004-2008 cost them $200 million in server expenses.

Then again, looking at the amount that they get per month.. That's probably taking them about 1 year to get. Meh.

Talking about WoW? with at least 11 million players at 15$ a month thats 1,980,000,000 each year, how much of that you think is profit?

If you're talk about any MMO that has enough content and instant fans (like star wars peeps willing to pay 2 play) they could prolly have a huge profit margin with
just 1/3 of players that WoW has not to mention the 50-60$ each person will initially pay to buy the game in the first place.
Even if the game runs a year and dies I dont think any money will really be lost.
: Re: The Future
: *<JO>*Rando Tantra April 26, 2010, 12:58 AM
Wow has over 15 million subscribers. All of which have had to atleast purchase base wow which started at 50 bucks and is now down to 30. Most, if not all of them have also picked up each expansion, which is another 30-40 per expansion. Assuming that each of these people spent atleast 90 bucks on the game alone that's 1,350,000,000. They charge $15/mo on top of that, and have recently started selling things like ingame mounts at $25 a pop. They've made billions upon billions bro. They make 225 million a month in the monthly subscriptions alone.

-Rando
: Re: The Future
: *<JO>*Ekul April 26, 2010, 12:47 PM
Obviously WoW makes tons of money, but most MMOs don't make that kind of money. They have huge development costs for all of the original content plus all of the new content that is released regularly. Also, they have to pay to keep all of their servers online and running smoothly essentially 24/7. If you have 100,000 subscribers, an MMO charging $15 a month makes 18 million a year. While they will make a good profit, that isn't an unreasonable sum considering all the costs. Most MMOs have 100-500,000 subscribers, not the 11 million that WoW has. A good Star Wars MMO might get 2 million subscribers if its lucky. Other than WoW, the top MMO (Runescape) has 1.5 million players.

I don't think other MMOs should be judged based on WoW. I don't think WoW's success should be held against other MMOs, nor should it be a reason not to play one. Why are you unwilling to pay to play? Are you jealous and angry about the money the developers make or are you just unwilling to spend the money? If you don't have the money or don't think its worth it, thats a good reason. I don't think being upset about WoW's success is a reason to not play another game.
: Re: The Future
: *<JO>*Foxen,Mert April 26, 2010, 10:12 PM
p2p is just too much for me, I dont even Buy most the games I play, I only buy a game if it promises fun MP play and those I dont get as often as i'd like

: Re: The Future
: *<JO>*Rando Tantra April 27, 2010, 04:58 PM
The server costs of a MMO with only 100-500,000 subscribers is going to be nothing compared to the server costs needed by wow's subscriber base, so it is still a good example.

-Rando

: Re: The Future
: *<JO>*Ekul April 27, 2010, 05:18 PM
I don't think it is really. Most of they money is probably spent on the salaries of the staff, especially people like developers and artists. I don't think the server cost is the primary expense.

obviously we need to do something.. but we shouldnt be in such a haste to pick a game to divide us or hinder our members. Not sure what to say about this.. there isnt any other Star wars game coming out anytime soon that we can play like jka or even swtor... im not sure where i stand... in feb ill have a 150$ a month harley payment to pick up... sorry riding is more important then a few hours a week sitting on my kester punchin buttons on here... im not sure i would pay 15 bucks a month to play. as it is ill have to find a computer capable to play and buy the game... thats expensive enough for myself.

Just a suggestion, but if you guys are going to expand into another game, come up with a game that's not p2p.  Since not everyone can afford the subscription of p2p, it would most likely keep most of the member base if there's no p2p costs other than maybe renting a 16 to 32 slot server.

Right now I've got a poll in the clan section over in our forums, for a couple games to expand into  to try reviving the gaming aspect of [-RO-] and I left out the p2p games for the reason I mentioned.

: Re: The Future

Thats because they're essentially independent of the rest of the game. They have their own mods and enough people to keep a server very active.

They probably don't want to lose activity on their server by spreading it around. Its annoying, but with so little activity in the game, you can hardly blame them.

Cheers for fixing this. Thought the forums would be gone for good and we'd be dooooomed.

Any chance someone with the power to do so could send out a mass e-mail saying the forums are back up? We were down for about a month, which could be long enough for people to think they're not coming back.

Might also be worth having a backup board set up on a free forum service in the future.
